The conversation veered from directions to the supermarket to directions for life, culminating in my question and his response.<\/p>\n<p>What Koto meant was a friend who would always be with him, a \u201cpermanent friend\u201d, he explained, not knowing he was about to be introduced to Jesus, the true Eternal Friend.<\/p>\n<p>Before we parted ways, Koto said he wanted to go to a church to find out more. He readily left me his telephone number and connected with me on social media.<\/p>\n<p>On a different day in a different neighbourhood, 80 Japanese who were homeless or needy stood neatly in rows in a back alley and a public park of the entertainment and shopping district of Ikebukuro.<\/p>\n<p>Each clutched an A4 sheet of paper with a Bible verse and a short devotional, listening intently to testimonies being shared that night. God is making new wine in old Japan.<\/p>\n<h2>Unity in prayer, unity in purpose<\/h2>\n<p>Japan\u2019s\u00a0<em>kairos<\/em>\u00a0has come, say pastors and missionaries, referring to the ancient Greek word meaning an appointed time when God acts.<\/p>\n<p>This was heard over and over from pastors, leaders and church workers from Singapore and Japan during the LoveJapan vision trip in May.<\/p>\n<p>The trip was part of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/saltandlight.sg\/faith\/its-time-for-the-church-to-love-japan\/\">LoveJapan movement launched by LoveSingapore in 2019<\/a>\u00a0to unite churches to serve and love Japan through partnerships, evangelism and church planting.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_121178\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_121178\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121178\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121178 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/saltandlight.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMG_2067-1-scaled.jpeg\" sizes=\"(max-width: 2048px) 100vw, 2048px\" srcset=\"https:\/\/saltandlight.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMG_2067-1-scaled.jpeg 2048w, https:\/\/saltandlight.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMG_2067-1-768x576.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/saltandlight.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMG_2067-1-1536x1152.jpeg 1536w\" alt=\"\" width=\"2048\" height=\"1536\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121178\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">About 150 pastors and leaders turned up to unite in prayer on the opening day of the LoveJapan vision trip in May.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The movement has set its sights on 20 cities in seven geographical regions through four strategic focus points: Reaching young adults and youths, signs and wonders in evangelism, church planting and disaster relief.<\/p>\n<p>This year\u2019s LoveJapan vision trip opened on May 7 with a united prayer meeting at Shinjuku Shalom Church in Tokyo.<\/p>\n<p>About 150 pastors and leaders from 70 churches and organisations across both Singapore and Japan responded that morning to the call to love Japan, to consecrate themselves for the work, and to pray for an awakening in the Land of the Rising Sun.<\/p>\n<p>They came from different nations, were of different ages and represented different denominations.<\/p>\n<p>Many felt the excitement, some sensed anticipation, others called it fire \u2013 it was the Spirit of God that swept through the meeting that morning amidst a remarkable display of unity and collective love for Japan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAmazing. Only God could have done this,\u201d said Pastor Jeff Chong, Chairman of LoveSingapore and Senior Pastor of Hope Church.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cClearly God is doing a new thing in Japan.\u201d<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_121151\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_121151\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121151\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121151 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/saltandlight.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/IMG_0347-e1717495814826.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1392\" height=\"1041\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121151\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Unity is one of the indications that Japan\u2019s\u00a0kairos\u00a0has come, said pastors and missionaries at the LoveJapan vision trip. In Kyushu, Singapore pastors connected with leaders in the region to pray and to strengthen friendships.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>The unity witnessed that morning is one of the indications that it is God\u2019s appointed time for Japan, said pastors and missionaries present. Multitudes are coming to work with missionaries and pastors in Japan, where Christians make up just 1% of the population.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEverywhere (local pastors) go they are seeing people come to Japan,\u201d said Pastor Eugene Seow of Living Sanctuary Brethren Church, who led the Kyushu region for LoveJapan.<\/p>\n<p>The hearts of the Japanese are open, the people are spiritually hungry and the harvest field is ripe, pastors said.<\/p>\n<h2>No greater anticipation than now<\/h2>\n<p>Japan-based pastors, too, are catching the vision of God\u2019s\u00a0<em>kairos<\/em>\u00a0for their ministry.<\/p>\n<div class=\"pull-quote\">\n<p>In Osaka, Pastor Toshiki Morikawa shared how he had started preaching in the street and \u201csaw people getting instantly healed\u201d.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>In a church in Kyushu that had to split into two groups due to Covid restrictions, the attendance in one group grew within six months to 60, a large number by the standards of a Japanese church.<\/p>\n<p>Brazilian missionary Fabio Tsukayama and his wife, Elizabeth, planted LifeShare Christian Center \u2013 the first church in Nagayo \u2013 last year. It quickly grew to about 30 people with a full worship band \u2013\u00a0a small beginning by Singapore standards but notable in Japan, where church attendance typically hover between 30 and 40, sometimes even after years.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_121169\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_121169\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121169\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121169 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/saltandlight.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/92aa2847-d3af-4d8d-86b4-53067a74be3e-1-e1717492542126.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1092\" height=\"1504\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121169\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">\u201cIt was touching to see a pair of teenagers studying the Japanese tracts and books we gave them,\u201d said Pastor Julia Sia of Renewal Christian Church, who led a team to Chubu during the vision trip.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<p>Another sign that God is gathering momentum is the openness of the Japanese to discuss topics that go beyond the surface, missionaries in Japan shared during the vision trip.<\/p>\n<p>The Japanese people are grappling with questions about the purpose and meaning of life as a weakening economy and major disasters in the land have shattered the financial and social security once taken for granted in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cChristian volunteers have made a big impact on the lives of those hit by the tsunami,\u201d said Louis Lau, a Singaporean who first went to Japan with his family in 1990 as a missionary. \u201cThey helped to clean up (the wreckage), feed the people and they stayed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There is also an unprecedented level uncertainty since Covid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve never seen this before,\u201d said Pastor Scott Douma, who came to Japan as a missionary in 1981 and planted Every Nation Church Yokohama in 1986. \u201cPeople are coming to church and opening up about deep things. In the past they would never talk about these things.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor years, there was great anticipation that revival was coming but it never came.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut something broke last year. I believe revival really is coming and the water is rising. In my 40-plus years in Japan, I\u2019ve never had greater expectation than now.\u201d<\/p>\n<h2>Seeing God move in the nation<\/h2>\n<p>All this evidence of God\u2019s time for Japan has instilled an urgency in the Christian community to evangelise, equip leaders, foster church growth and plant churches in Japan.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere is a real passion to see God move in the nation,\u201d Pastor Jeremy Seaward, strategic coordinator for LoveJapan and Senior Pastor of Victory Family Centre noted.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_121180\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\">\n<figure id=\"attachment_121180\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-121180\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-121180 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/saltandlight.sg\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/7e0d7f66-2872-4a6e-a165-8dae6b563c64-e1717491715251.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1374\" height=\"733\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-121180\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Pastors from Singapore churches led teams into six strategic regions from north to south.
